Once upon a time, in the city of Alexandria in Egypt, which was conquered by Alexander the Great, one of the greatest houses of knowledge in the world was founded, known as the Library of Alexandria. This library was a flourishing expression of Hellenistic civilization that developed in various Greek cities outside of Greece. The Ptolemaic dynasty was its architect. Today, no trace of this historic library remains.
On October 16, 2002, a dazzling new library called “Bibliotheca Alexandrina” was founded in the city. At its entrance, a white statue of Demetrius of Phalereus (340 BC-280 BC), the famous librarian of the vanished Library of Alexandria, and a bust of Alexander the Great were placed.
Sakti Sadhan Mukhopadhyay’s book The Lost Library of Alexandria: A Forgotten History is about this vanished library. How was such a house of knowledge built? Why was it founded there? Who were its architects? Who used to come there? Who were the participants in this quest for knowledge? Why did it disappear? A book containing these stories, honest and fake reviews, information, and photos. A vanished library, the Library of Alexandria. This is the first book of its kind in the Bengali language, carefully written and edited for book lovers and scholars.
This brilliant English translation by Jagari Mukherjee will help the book reach out to a wider audience, and, as all good books do, will instruct and delight its readers.
