The challenges faced by adolescent girls in India is aptly described in Chandana Khan’s book, published posthumously by Virasat Art Publication. The work was originally a 1993 Masters dissertation at University of East Anglia which makes it an interesting read from many angles. Apart from being of historical value, a record of the Decade of the Girl Child, it is greatly well-researched and written in lucid prose. However, one cannot overlook the fact that the dissertation was written 31 years ago, and the present scenario needs to be acknowledged.

Born in 1954, in Miaapur, then East Pakistan, she came to Kolkata after India was divided in 1947. She studied English literature at Jadavpur University and taught in a College. Later she became an IAS officer. But her creative endeavor never stopped. She has written several books of poems and short stories in English and Bangla.
