Poet, critic and translator Naina Dey has proved that she can competently blend style and substance seamlessly in her short stories and very short stories. Dey’s debut collection of short stories The Poltergeist and Other Short Stories demonstrates beyond doubt that the writer shows uncommon control over words, descriptions and sequences as she effectively creates surprises and shocks, in these admirably concise and nuanced narratives. If the story The Tree awakens empathy, braiding the human and non-human ecosystems with aplomb, the title story The Poltergeist is much more than thrills and chills while ‘Jesus in the picture’ brings the mortal and divine in close juxtaposition. Dey’s short stories make us read not just the lines but between the lines. They are a fine blend of affect, cognition and inspiration, the last, often indefinable. This is the USP of a skilled short story writer that Naina Dey exudes in each of these deep and memorable short stories.

Naina Dey’s short stories are such a delight to read. Filled with mystery, mysticism and atmospheric marvels, Dey proves she is a master story-teller as well as a beautiful poet. Reading this marvellous collection is like being a guest at a dear friend’s dinner party. The food and the company are consumed with much pleasure and the delight to the senses lingers comfortably long after the friends have departed.
