Poetry has been a form of rebellion and critique of society, and Naheed Akhtar justifies herself as the one in this collection Let the Womb Hold and Other Poems. The title poem speaks about the agony of being a woman and wraps the poet’s plea for letting the second sex bloom. Calling women, a “second sex” fails to capture the wavelength of energy that allows a woman to bloom. That is the reason the direct mention of the term has deliberately been avoided by the poet. The poems in this collection set the finest essence of Naheed’s melancholic, or in other terms pessimistic form of poetry. They are as varied as her persona.
