Abhimanyu is a fictionalized account of the life of a doctor, Dr. Subhash Mukhopadhyay who, instead of being applauded by the government for his pioneering research work in the field of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, was humiliated and eventually pushed towards suicide. Novelist Ramapada Chowdhury has deftly chosen the title Abhimanyu, alluding subtly to the juvenile warrior of the Mahabharat, who was killed unethically by seven great warriors, an act in which they collectively violated all norms and rules of warfare. Dr. Dipankar Roy, the protagonist in Chowdhury’s novel tries to fight as a lone warrior, as Abhimanyu did, against a bunch of extremely powerful men who are specialised doctors and bureaucrats. Translator Tania Chakravertty, an esteemed researcher, critic and author, has captured the spirit of this great novel perfectly in her translation.
